The Kite Runner

Ok-
As the posts were getting out of control and confusing, here we go

again...We should all be through Chapters 4 and 5 by Monday, so what I

want you to do is discuss your thoughts about Amir & Hassan. Who do

you like better and why? Also, what are your thoughts of the author's

depiction of Afghanistan, so far? What are your impressions of the

country and the people, as you have read so far?

PLEASE keep on topic. It is just too confusing to stray off topic. It is

witty and funny, but very frustrating...especially for me as I'm trying to

grade you!

Thinking back to when you asked us about the effect war had on kids triggered something in mind. Amir grew up in Afghanistan yet he didnt live in a time of war or at least it wasnt around him growing up. He was able to escape that and being that he did it was a huge culture shock when he came back and saw the stoning at the soccer game while for other boys and men it is all they know. So even though Amir is portrayed as a tourist in his own country he is infact the lucky one

Jake said...

Going back to laura's question back awhile, she asked why Rahim Khan would tell Amir about how he was Hassan's brother. I think Rahim Khan wanted to tell Amir because he has been holding in this secret for such a long time and i think that he just wanted to let it out and tell anyone, and who better to tell than Amir.

I was honestly suprised that Assef was the leader of the Taliban. It made sense because he just led that kind of life and had the mentality, but I didnt expect Amir and Assef to come face to face again. Also I thought that it was pretty ironic that Amir started laughing while he was getting beat up. It made Assef mad but it showed him that he isn't the bully he once was and that Amir has finally grown up. I was extremely happy when Amir stopped being a coward and actually faught him, even though he lost he tried and that was most important. It was also interesting that Sohrab saved Amir as his father did.I thought of it as Hassan coming alive through Sohrab to do what he always did and save him, also as a sign to show he was finally forgiven.

Jake said...

I think it is amazing how during the soccer game, two people are stoned to death and nobody really cares. It shows how crazy it has gotten in Afghanistan when people go to a sports game to have fun and end up watching the murder of two people during half time.

Anonymous said...

To answer Zach's question I think Sohrab will trust Amir because although he isn't opening up right now, he will come around, but after being abused and losing so many people it's probably extremely hard to know who to trust but by saving him that in way already shows that he trusts him because he could have let Assef kill him but he must have realized that it would be a lot better if he was with Amir and not Assef any longer

Jake said...

While reading the book, i keep thinking why Amir wants to give Sohrab to the Americans running some orphanage. I think that Amir should adopt Sohrab because Amir wants a kid, and he can't get one without adoption, and Sohrab wants a father, and who better than his half uncle, or whatever Amir is to Sohrab. I keep waiting for Amir to ask Sohrab to come back to America, and it never comes.

Jake said...

To answer Zach's question, why wouldn't Sohrab trust Amir. He is told that Amir is his father's brother. Sohrab has gone through so much with the Taliban that i think he will trust anyone who tries to save him.

Patrick said...

I have a feeling that Amir is going to mess something up and break Sohrab's trust. Sohrab is delicate and has been abused, and one thing Amir says could destroy the bond they made.

Patrick said...

When Amir is being beaten up, he finally finds peace and forgiveness. I feel happy for Amir that after all these years he is finally free (although he gets the crap beaten out of him).

Patrick said...

I found that these chapters were predictable. Sohrab has a slingshot, and saves Amir's life (like Hassan). Assef also raped Sohrab (like what he did to Hassan). Amir finally gets beaten up by Assef (Hassan was in his place in the alleyway), and Assef looses one eye.

jeff12 said...

Pat- Although i share your happiness for Amir's feeling of forgiveness. I also feel sorry for Sohrab, not only does he witness the beating but he must disable another man. He is only a very young boy and he must blind the man who beats his savior. Sohrab may have hated Assef but he is still to young to perform such an act.

Patrick said...

Amir and Sohrab bonded when they were in the room with Assef, and Assef was the reason. If Amir saved Sohrab without getting beaten up by Assef, Sohrab wouldn't feel comfortable with Amir. When Amir was getting beaten up, it showed Sohrab that both were hurt by the same man, and were in the same situation. But most importantly that Amir will do anything for Sohrab.

zach said...

yeah i just feel like adding my excitement towards these past few chapters...so much has been revieled to me. i can't wait for everyone to read the end.

Patrick said...

I agree with you Jeff. Sohrab shouldn't been forced into that situation. But I felt that Sohrab was very courageous when he shot Assef. Now Sohrab has to live with his actions like Amir and Baba, until he is forgiven by someone or an action.

zach said...

yeah sohrab is very courageous jusst like his dad Hassan. I feel bad though that Sohrab feels that he did wrong by shooting Assef with the brass ball.

kinsella said...

i agree with jake i think Sorab wont trust Amir because he has been so mistreated by the Taliban his trust in everything has been ruined. I also think that Sorab is like hassan after the rape. Hassan secluded himself, and Sorab is trying to do that. After the rape Hassan still did his chores, like sorab did the dance. BOth of them just did enought to get by.

zach said...

HEY KINSELLA LIKE MY PICTURE HAHAH
lol yeah its a good pic

zach said...

~QUESTION`

Do you think that Assef and that Taliban will come after Sohrab and Amir.

Danielle L. said...

to answer zachs question i think that assef will come after amir and sohrab because assef doesnt like to lose. he likes things done his way and he likes to be in charge it seems. so when sohrab hit assef in the eye it only just made assef more mad at amir and sohrab and he probably wants to get them back for what they have done

Danielle L. said...

i also found it ironic when hassan said to assef as a boy that he would be one - eyed assef because he would shoot him in the eye with the slingshot, that his son sohrab, actually made him a one eyed assef

Laughing Laura said...
This comment has been removed by the author.
Laughing Laura said...

Yes, I do think that Assef and the Taliban will come after Amir. Being the evil person Assef is, he doesn't want to lose any battle, or in this case, fight (emotional and physical) with Amir.

Laughing Laura said...

I agree with Danielle when she says that the 'one-eyed' Assef was ironic. It is very interesting how the author incorporates so many different aspects into the story. It's quite amazing, indeed.
:D

RyantheLion123 said...

i know everyone thinks that Assef losing his eye is ironc and that when Hassan said it, it was a foreshadowing, but i think that it is also kind of gorss that he lost his eye and that the author even said that the "eye juice" came out of his eye.

RyantheLion123 said...

Zach- to answer your question, i don't think that Assef and the Taliban will come after Amir and Sohrab, one because Assef even said that this fight was to find out the best and he won't do anything to him afterwards, and two i don't think he wants his other eye taken out by Sohrab or something else

jeff12 said...

Assef said that the winner of the fight was the better man. I don't think he will go after Sohrab and Amir.

Anonymous said...

Zach- I don't think that Assef will come after Amir and Sorhab because when they were kids Assef promised he would get revenge on both Hassan and Amir. In the eyes of Assef I think he has gotten revenge because he already killed Hassan :( . He might have mentally killed Amir because of what he did to Hassan and everyone he loves. Also he would not want to face Amir after losing an eye.

kinsella said...

i think that he will come after them because he wantes Amir dead, he is also probably pist at sorab for replacing his eye with a brass ball.

Anonymous said...

I also agree that it was ironic when Hassan forshadows about Assef being one-eyed.It was also ironic that his son was the one to make Assef that way even though he probably knew nothing about what his father said when he was a child. Or maybe he did?

Patrick said...

I agree with Ryan and Jeff. Assef won't try to get revenge because he realizes that he can't always win after that fight. Plus he got all his anger out on Amir already (Amir got the bejesus knocked out of him by Assef that day).

Patrick said...

I have a feeling that this even matured Assef. He finally got hurt, which lowered his pride, and made him realize that he isn't the all powerful and invincible person he is.

Anonymous said...

Honestly I don't know how you all saw this coming or at least some did, like maybe its just me but I didn't expect any of this. But o well anyways I think Assef and the Taliban could come after Amir and Sohrab, but I don't think they will because Assef got what he deserved and since he was beat, maybe it will put him in his place and realize not to continue to go after them, but at the same time it could have made him more mad and might make him want to go after them even more

SAMloveshumanities said...

alyssa i agree with you this is like woahhh.. and i hope our class descussions also contribute to our grades because i say alot more during class .. and oh man well about 22-23 or whatever i read a while ago! i can not beleive that that whole sling shot thing happened oh man it was like fate like shorab finished hassans duty oh man it was thirlliiingg!! i cant even explain it haha i was so happy and i waslike in super shock when i found out that was assef.. i think it is lunatic crazy and those are the kind of people that need help what he was telling amir that releives him by going into those houses and shooting people randomly.. wack job

SAMloveshumanities said...

yeh i agree with ryan and them up there ^^ i was laughing when amir started tolaugh while assef was beating him and i feel like he understood that was it when shorab hit him in the eye.. when amir was getting beaten he felt like he deserved this and this is what he deserved thats why he was laughing but likein class i was just kind of confused about why sohrab was so quite at the hosptial all the time when amir was getting better .. i don't know it was just akward.. but im so happy they were ok

imguna go read chapter 24 right now so ryan and all you people who have read the book twice.. SHUSH until tomorrow morning haha :D because im super excited

SAMloveshumanities said...

had to comment on zachs picture hahahahaha i love it :) ... and i also think this book is like our class like how everything comes together oh man its exciting.. and the letter to amir from rahim was good to top it off because it tells him again that he was just a boy when the rape happened and that he needs to forgive himself because guilt eats you up after such a long time..

dandy.. later guys

zach said...

man what a good yet sad chapter. who saw that coming, everything was going so great with Sohrab and Amir, but of course this has to be one of the most saddest books so theres bound to be an inccedint like the one in the bathtub. so many emotions were running through me at the time and i thought i couldn't take it. haha alyssa is so right when she said this was like a soap oprah.

zach said...

~QUESTION~

Do you think the incedint in the bath tub will affect the relationship between Amir and Sohrab. If so what do you think will happen?

Patrick said...

Zach- I think that the bathtub event has broken the weak bond between Sohrab and Amir. Well I think that Amir will try to bond and make everything back to normal, but it will take a very long time until he forgives Amir.

Patrick said...

I feel bad for Sohrab. His life is completely out of whack, and he will live with his scars for a very long time. I don't think anyone could bring this boy around after all the trauma he went through.

Patrick said...

Does anyone think there is hope for Sohrab? Sadly I think there is little chance that he will live the rest of his life happily.

Danielle L. said...

i feel so bad for sohrab. the poor kid is only like 12 and he is like emotionally scared for the rest of his life. he looses his parents and close family, gets raped by assef, and has to live his life day by day wondering if he is going to live a better life in america with amir

Danielle L. said...

to answer zachs question i think that sohrabs and amirs relationship will suffer with the incident in the bathtub because sohrab is a confused little boy and he was just starting to get to now amir truly, and i think that sohrab will not be able to trust amir just like amir had promised he wouldnt have to go to orphange and he almost had to

Danielle L. said...

i hope that sohrab will be okay and be able to go to america with amir because it seems like sohrab has lived a very hard depressing life so far and he needs to get away from the misery and the best thing would to go to america. it seemed to help amir and maybe it will help sohrab. sohrab is still a young boy and he still has a lot of growing up to do, but with the proper guidance i think that he can take the sin out of himself, because he said he has commited so many sins, in america.

Jake said...

I thought it was funny when Sohrab hit Assef in the eye with the brass ball. it was like he finished his father's promise, Hassan, to give Assef only one eye.

Jake said...

I think that Assef will definately try to come after Amir and Sohrab. I think that he will try to kill them, but he won't. For everyone that said he wouldn't come after them because he said in the room that if Amir wins, he won't care, i think you're wrong. Out of every book or movie u guys have seen, how many of them does the bad guys keep their word. They always talk about letting them go, but they never do. What happened to Assef was way too big for him just to forget and say, "o well, too bad for me". He'll definately try to get revenge.

Jake said...

And about the bathtub. I was so mad. When i was reading and Amir got the call from his wife saying that Sohrab didn't need to go to the orphanage, i was so happy, but when he walked into the bathtub, i was stunned. I never expected that to happen. By the way i thought that it was great writing how Khaled Hosseini wrote the passage. he didn't say exactly what happended, he said that Amir walked in and screamed. Even when the ambulance came, he was still screaming.

SAMloveshumanities said...

ZACH ~~ i think that Amir will watch over Sohrab alot more and that they will be closer because what happen in the bath tub shows how much Shorab didn't want to go to the orphanage and that was pretty intense man

I was like in super shock now i know exactly what your talking about
i didnt finish the book im going to finish it tonight but im sooo excited that they can bring him over and then get a visa in the US.. but it was so ironic that Soraya called after Shorab did that to himself during the night.. ahhh so typical in books and movies it frustrating hehe.. but im so glad hes alive

Danielle L. said...

while reading the last page of the book i was happy for amir, he finally may have freed himself from all the trouble he had put himself through with being mean and cruel to hassan, but maybe after all those years he is not going to let it bother him anymore because of sohrab

Patrick said...

The ending is so sad. Sohrab needs a long time to he heal his scars. But the sad part is that Amir and Soraya try so hard to make Sohrab part of the family.

kinsella said...

i found the ending very touching because of what Amir said to Sorab. "A thousand times over" this is what hassan said to Amir befor he got raped.

RyantheLion123 said...

the ending isn't as sad as i thought it would be, because Amir said "A Thousand Times Over" like what hassan said to Amir when he ran the last kite at the festival.

RyantheLion123 said...

It also is sad because Soraya and Amir tried so hard to get Sohrab into the country, and he didn't even appreciate it. All he did was sit around and not talk, all the adults called the little mute one.

jeff12 said...

I thought the ending was very well written. There is no eady way to end a novel, but i feel the author did a great job.

RyantheLion123 said...

jeff- you are right about how the author ends the novel, but i feel sad because i think or want the novel to go on a little bit longer to see if Sohrab acttually talks , like in full sentences.

Anonymous said...

Ok so I know i wasn't in class today cause i was feeling a bit under the weather but Im better so I will be back tomorrow, but OMG the last two chapters were AMAZING!!actually I can't even think of a word to describe how good they were.I'm not gonna lie i was crying during 24 hahaha but i just can't get over Sohrab doing that, thats honestly the last thing i expected to happen. I'm so glad he is ok and that he can go to America because now he can have a better life!

BY THE WAY EVERONE NEEDS TO CHECK OUT MY PICTURE =]]

Anonymous said...

I agree with Jeff and Ryan the ending was perfect. It couldn't have been a better one. I'm so glad it was a happy one cause if it would have been something sad or depressing I dont even know what I would have done!this is honestly my new favorite book of all time. It deff needs to be in the Oprah's Book Club or whatever it's called haha

ColinS said...

The ending of this book was very well written and it was very ironic how Amir had said,"A thousand times over." This is irnic because this is said right after amir and sohrab win the contest and cut the last kite. This is ironic cause this is what Hassan says right before he runs the kite for amir after they win their contest in Afghanistan when they were children.

Patrick said...

Amir has matured incredibly over these past few chapters. At first he is a mean little child, but now he is a loving father. The author did an awesome job reincorporating the quote, "For you, a thousand times over".

ColinS said...

The ending was superb and couldn't have been written any better it was the first book in my entire life i would read again and probably enjoy the same or more than the first time I read. This novel gets an A+ in my book.

Patrick said...

Colin- Maybe something bad might happen to Amir after he said that. Maybe the little kids might beat up Amir for the kite.
I think Amir really forgave himself after he said, "For you, a thousand times over". Now, after Hassan gave his life to Amir, Amir can finally repay his brother through Sohrab.

Patrick said...

I still found it funny that Amir was the only grown person chasing the kite with a bunch of little kids. But that last paragraph was very powerful and well written nonetheless.

Danielle L. said...

i loved when amir said to oshrab "for you a thousands times over" cause i thought it was so cute. although sohrab didnt no that his father had said it to amir when he won the kite tournament

Danielle L. said...

even though amir keeps trying to get sohrab to open up to him, i feel bad for soraya because her husbands nephew comes out of no where and he is isolated from them like they arent even there. and amir and soraya wanted to start a family of there own but sohrab is just making it difficult for them. but sohrab does have a good reason to be the way he is, he is only a boy but has been scared for the rest of his life

kinsella said...

i agree with colin, this waws one of the best books that i have ever read, and i would defenantly read it agian.

kinsella said...

I think that Amir has finally releived himself of his guilt and pain. AS rahim Khan said he "made everything right again", i beleive that he will live a happy life with Sorab and i think Sorab will start to open up and not seclude himself to the world.

kinsella said...

LJ- I FINALLY UNDERSTAND WHY THE BOOK TAKES PLACE IN AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!! first off, Baba and Amir left Kabul and wanted to be free. Also Baba loved the idea of America. Another reason is that Amir and Baba also left the middle east to run from all of there lies and guilt. Another reason that the author had Baba and Amir live in america is because it secluded them from their old life(ex. Rahim Khan said that he rarly talked to baba.) There was also no chance of Amir running into Hassan to make everything right befor he died. Another reason the author put them in America, was to cause conflict. The conflict shaped Sorabs personality. After he found out he might have to go back into an orfanage he tried to commit suicide( EVEN THOUGH IF HE WAITED 5 MINUTES HE WOULD HAVE FOUND OUT THAT HE DIDNT HAVE TO GO BACK INTO AN ORFANAGE!!!). This drove Sorab into a state of depression even though he was able to go to America. Also The Taliban banned kite torniments and Kite Running. That was the thing that sparked a new life for Amir and Sorab. If they werent in America then Amir wouldnt have been able to start a new relationship with Sorab.

Anonymous said...

Even though a kite broke up Hassan and Amir's friendship because it led to HAssan being raped, a kite also brought Amir and Sohrab together. The Kite comes full Circle.

zach said...

Finally, everyone finished the book. THat ending was so sad, from Sohrab not talking and Amir feeling young again. I felt especially bad when Soraya bought Sohrab all these nice toys but he did not even touch them. Then in one scene she asks AMir what Sohrab's voice sounds like because its been so long since he's spoken.
TO me this was probally one of the best books i've ever read and defitnaly the saddest.

Danielle L. said...

when rahim khan said to amir you have a chance to make things right again, amir deffinately did. he is trying to adopt his nephew and make up for all the lost time that him and hassan missed with his sohrab

Laughing Laura said...

One word will describe the all the feelings I need to say about this book: wow .

SAMloveshumanities said...

i am def going to go out and buy this book haha and read it again.. what we were talking about in class was sooo cool i didnt even see half the symbolism it just keeps going and going what great book honestly

We need to read books like this more often. It was so much better than Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm. I am going to have to reread the book now that i know everything that is going to happen.

Jessie said...

just seeing if this is working...

jessie said...

Why America? The Author chose America because Amir went from one extreme to another. Afghanistan being a not so wealthy country to America which is one of the wealthiest countries in the whole world. He also chose America because it is good to have your reader be able to relate to parts of your book. Having Amir move to America and back to Afghanistan showed us that even if he was happy hear there were more important things to him back in Afghanistan and he was willing to give up a new life in America and go back to some parts of his old life, but years later.

jessie said...

I think Amir is telling this story specifically from San Francisco because San Francisco is a fairly rich area. I think the author is trying to show that Amir has come a long way in his life, and has made a good one for himself by having him live and tell the story from San Francisco, California in the USA.

jessie said...

The role of women in this novel is not very strong. The author made it so both Amir and Amir did not have mothers because they both died when the children were quite young. I think he does this because he is telling his readers that women's only role was mostly conceiving children in Afghanistan. Not even clean the houses or cook food like in many other cultures, the author shows us by having Amir and Ali in the novel that servants took care of household chores, not women.

jessie said...

I would now title Amir as a coward and bad friend right after Amir was raped, and soon after that i would title him as mean, self centered, arrogant, and rude also. He didn’t even try to make things right with Amir, he just kept to himself and blocked Amir out, no matter how hard Amir tried. Amir could have come to this point in his life because he did not have a mother or mother figure to look up to as a child and young adult, he only had a father that he respected and loved greatly but always was trying to get his attention and approval. Without a mother, Amir missed out on motherly characteristics( sympathy, caring, kind, loving) that children learn from their mothers.

jessie said...

I do not think that if Amir had stood up Amir that everything would still be fine between them. I think that things would be a little better then they turned out, but not fine. What happened to Amir is tragic and changed his life forever, and no one could change how he felt or how he changed that day. I think if Amir stood up also for Amir then Amir would have had a different life also.

jessie said...

Other signs that the boys are drifting apart as they got older were things like Amir ignoring Amir, and Amir ignoring Amir. Amir getting angry easily and not wanting to have anything to do with Amir, and Amir wanting Baba to get rid of Ali and Amir. They may have drank from the same berates as infants but Amir would defiantly not allow that now, no matter how guilty he was and angry at himself for not protecting Amir in the ally.

jessie said...

Amir fears greatly that he “killed” his mother, and that effects his character and personality very much. Guiltiness affects ones personality in so many ways, people become shady, insecure, and separated. I think that if he still had his mother he would have gone and stood up for Amir in the ally, because he would have had a certain instinct to save the ones he loves, just like a mother has. His fear also affects his relation ship with his father because Baba was not very sympathetic father, he always hoped that Amir would play soccer, but Amir was more into books and literature, and if he had a mother i think she would have paid attention to what he wanted instead of trying to make him something he wasn't.

Lynrd Skynrd

If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be travelling on, now,
There's too many places I haven't seen
And if I stayed here with you, now
Things just wouldn't be the same
Well I'm as free as a bird now,
And a bird you can not change.
And a bird you can not change.
And a bird you can not change.
Lord knows I can't change

Bye, bye, its been a sweet love.
And though this feeling I can't change.
Please don't take it badly,
The Lord knows I'm to blame.
And, if I stayed here with you now
Things just wouldn't be the same.
For I'm as free as a bird now,
And this bird you'll never change.
And the bird you can not change.
And the bird you can not change.
Lord knows, I can't change.
Lord help me, I can't change.
